Looking for a Few Good (Wo)men
What an honor to be posting a blog on Veterans Day. Thank you to the men and women who serve and who have served in our military. Without your commitment and sacrifice, our freedom and our way of life in the United States wouldn’t be possible.
As a human resources professional, I often reflect on the brand an organization projects when it is looking to attract talent. Consider just a few of the many iconic recruitment slogans that have been used by branches of the military: Be All You Can Be (Army); Aim High (Air Force); Accelerate Your Life (Navy); and The Few. The Proud. The Marines. (Marines). These recruitment slogans paint a picture of what it means to be a part of that specific team. These slogans resonate, they are memorable, and they are enduring—even when they cease to be used.
Just like the military, financial institutions need to consider the brand and image they wish to project to potential candidates, expand the pool of potential candidates by adopting a mindset of inclusion, embrace diversity, and consider new recruitment channels.
There is a war for talent. Attracting and retaining talent has become a key strategic initiative for organizations across industries. Success today depends on having individuals who can contribute to their role today and also be developed for future opportunities. And I often hear, if I may borrow another recruitment slogan from the Marines, “We’re looking for a few good men.”
