The Challenge

Mackinac Straits’ data was housed in different systems, spread across the health system’s critical access hospital, rural health clinic, skilled nursing facility and satellite clinics. It took hours for Mackinac Straits to pull and configure data — and by then, it was outdated and unusable by stakeholders.

The Solution

Wipfli consolidated data from Mackinac Straits’ various systems into a single database, where users could access and manipulate key data. Custom dashboards and visualizations made the database user-friendly and helped leaders measure performance, identify outliers and act quickly. Wipfli’s dashboards covered three key areas: finances, operations and quality.

The results

Wipfli gave Mackinac Straits real-time information about its financial performance, such as accounts receivable, which it can investigate by payor, location and service line. It can also see volume and admission trends over time and by physician, location and patient. And quality dashboards help the health system manage Medicare readmissions to protect revenue. Now, Mackinac Straits can analyze information and explore trends in a few clicks and enact timely, targeted improvements.
