Orchard Software, a leader in laboratory information systems (LIS), faced an increasing volume of client requests for data analytics and reporting services. Often highly specific and detailed, the ad-hoc requests required slicing Orchard’s LIS data in unique ways, pulling staff away from the company’s core product development goals and delaying the next version of its LIS products.

Orchard recognized that responding to these customized requests for data insights was unsustainable and required a solution that would allow clients access to self-service data analytics. The company’s primary goal was to design a scalable, cloud-based platform where clients could easily retrieve, slice and analyze their data with stringent access controls to help ensure security and data integrity.

The Solution

Orchard engaged Wipfli to develop a streamlined, cloud-based data analytics solution using Microsoft Power BI and Azure Synapse. Key elements included:
